Fort St John

Town in Peace River Regional District, northeast British Columbia, Canada; population (1991) 14,200. It is situated near the Alberta border, 290 km/180 mi north-northeast of Prince George and 65 km/41 mi northwest of Dawson Creek. The community expanded with the completion in 1942 of the Alaska Highway. The discovery in 1955 of oil and gas, 16 km/10 mi to the southeast at Taylor, helped boost the local economy. Other local industries include lumbering and coalmining.

Established in 1805 as a North West Company fort, Fort St John was destroyed in 1823 by American Indians, rebuilt in 1860, and subsequently moved on several occasions.
