Fort Walton Beach

City in Okaloosa County, in the northwestern panhandle of Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico, 55 km/34 mi east of Pensacola; population (1990) 21,500. It is a centre for tourism, fishing, and yachting. Manufactures include electronic equipment, lumber, concrete, and boats.

It was incorporated as Fort Walton City in 1937, and was renamed Fort Walton Beach in 1953. Eglin Air Force Base is nearby.

In the 1830s Fort Walton was a Seminole Wars fort, later a fishing village, and evolved into a yachting centre in the 1920s. The Indian Temple Mound and Museum is in the city.
