Fort Walton Beach| City in Okaloosa County, in the northwestern panhandle of Florida, on the Gulf of Mexico, 55 km/34 mi east of Pensacola; population (1990) 21,500. It is a centre for tourism, fishing, and yachting. Manufactures include electronic equipment, lumber, concrete, and boats. |
| It was incorporated as Fort Walton City in 1937, and was renamed Fort Walton Beach in 1953. Eglin Air Force Base is nearby. |
| In the 1830s Fort Walton was a Seminole Wars fort, later a fishing village, and evolved into a yachting centre in the 1920s. The Indian Temple Mound and Museum is in the city. |
