Fort Washington

Town in Prince George's County, south-central Maryland; population (1990) 24,000. It is located 19 km/12 mi south-southeast of Washington, DC, and to the east of the Potomac River. In the area of Warburton Manor (1661) and a 19th-century fort built on the river to protect the capital, it is an area of rapidly developing housing estates, among them some of Washington's most affluent black suburbs.

Community in Upper Dublin township, Montgomery County, southeast Pennsylvania; population (1990) 3,700. It is a suburb of Philadelphia, 21 km/13 mi north of the city. Situated here are a Revolutionary War battlefield and Hope Lodge, a 1740s Georgian mansion used as a Revolutionary field headquarters. Fort Washington contains commercial strips and an industrial park.
