Fort Wayne

Town in northeastern Indiana, USA, where the St Mary and St Joseph rivers meet to form the Maumee River, 255 km/158 mi from Chicago; seat of Allen County; population (2000) 205,700. It is the centre of a rich agricultural hinterland; industries include motor vehicles, electrical goods, electronics, and farm machinery.

A fort was built here against the American Indians in 1794 by Gen Anthony Wayne (1745–1796); it was incorporated as a city in 1840.

It is the seat of Concordia Theological Seminary (1846), Saint Francis College (1890), Fort Wayne Bible College (1904), Indiana Institute of Technology (1930), and Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (1964).
