Fort William

Town in Highland unitary authority, Scotland, near the head of Loch Linnhe, at the southern end of the Caledonian Canal, 90 km/56 mi southeast of Inverness; population (2001) 9,900. Straddling a natural route to the Highlands and Great Glen, the provision of tourist services has become a major industry. Distilleries, an aluminium smelter, and a pulp and paper mill offer further employment.

Its military base, built in 1665, was demolished in 1890 to make room for a railway station. The English general George Monk (1608–70) founded the fort, which was named after William, Prince of Orange. It was redesigned in 1690 and besieged by the Jacobites in 1746.

Fort William was formerly an administrative centre for the old district of Lochaber.
