Fort Yates

Small town in Sioux County, south North Dakota; population (2000) 230. It is almost surrounded by Lake Oahe, and lies 80 km/50 mi south of Bismarck. The fort, built in 1877, was abandoned in 1895 for Fort Lincoln at Bismarck. Fort Yates is the administrative headquarters of the Standing Rock Indian Reservation and is home to Standing Rock College (1971). Sitting Bull was buried here in 1890; his body was moved to Mobridge, South Dakota, in 1953.
