Fort-de-FranceCapital, chief commercial centre, and port of Martinique, West Indies, on the west coast at the mouth of the Madame River; population (1999 est) 94,000 (city), 134,700 (commune). It exports sugar, rum, tinned fruit, and cacao. There is an airport and the tourist industry is a source of much local revenue.
