Fortaleza

Industrial port, resort, and capital of Ceará federal unit (state), northeast Brazil, on the Atlantic coast; population (1991) 1,708,700 (metropolitan area 2,357,100). Cotton, rice, coffee, sugar, hides, and vegetable oils are exported. Industries include textiles (particularly hammocks), flour-milling, and sugar-refining. Tourism has become increasingly important to the local economy. Fortaleza was first colonized by the Portuguese in 1603. It has a cathedral and several museums.
