Fortaleza

Industrial port, resort, and capital of Ceará federal unit (state), northeast Brazil, on the Atlantic coast; population (2000) 2,141,400; metropolitan area (2005 est) 3,349,800. Cotton, rice, coffee, sugar, hides, and vegetable oils are exported. Industries include textiles (particularly hammocks), flour-milling, and sugar-refining. Tourism has become increasingly important to the local economy. Fortaleza was first colonized by the Portuguese in 1603. It has a cathedral and several museums.
