Fortuny y Carbó, Mariano José Bernardo

    0.04 sec.

Fortuny y Carbó, Mariano José Bernardo (1838-1874)

Spanish painter and etcher. He worked mainly in Rome. During the Spanish war in Morocco, he followed the army to Africa 1859-62, making many studies of local life and military engagements.

Fortuny was born in Reus, Cataluña, and studied at the Academy of Barcelona and in Rome. He established a European reputation with his small genre and historical works, painted in a style similar to that of Ernest Meissonier. After a stay in Spain 1869, his style became much broader under the influence of Francisco Goya.
