Forum Appii

Ancient Roman post station on the Appian Way. According to the Roman poet Horace, it was the usual stopping point after a day's journey from Rome.

The stretch of the Appian Way that ran through the unhealthy Pomptine marshes was avoided by a canal which ran south from Forum Appii nearly to Terracina. It was at Forum Appii that the Christians of Rome met St Paul, according to the New Testament (Acts 28:15).
