phosphate

Salt or ester of phosphoric acid. Incomplete neutralization of phosphoric acid gives rise to acid phosphates (see acid salt and buffer). Phosphates are used as fertilizers, and are required for the development of healthy root systems. They are involved in many biochemical processes, often as part of complex molecules, such as ATP.
