Fotheringay Castle

Castle in Northamptonshire, England, on the River Nene, 14 km/9 mi southwest of Peterborough. Built in the reign of William the Conqueror and later enlarged, it was the birthplace of Richard III, and the place of execution of Mary Queen of Scots, following her long imprisonment, in 1587. The mound and moat of the castle can still be seen.

There is a small village of Fotheringay. Its church is built around the remains of the nave, aisles, and west tower of a far larger one, which was largely destroyed during the Reformation. The church tower is surmounted by an octagonal lantern. A 15th-century inn and one of still earlier date survive, as a farmhouse and a row of cottages respectively.
