Foulds, John (Herbert)

Foulds, John (Herbert) (1880-1939)

English composer and conductor. He joined a theatre orchestra in Manchester at the age of 14 and the Hallé Orchestra in 1900. He worked at various opera houses abroad, gave concerts for the forces during World War I ,and wrote A World Requiem (1919-21) for the war dead. He later conducted various music societies in London.

incidental music for Kalidasa's Sakuntala, Euripides' Trojan Women, and several others; A Vision of Dante (concert opera, 1905-08).

Choral

A World Requiem for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra (1919-21).

Orchestral

Epithalamium, Keltic Suite (1911), and Suite Fantastique for orchestra; Holiday Sketches, Suite française, and Gaelic Dream Song for small orchestra; Idyll for string orchestra.

Chamber

Mood Pictures for violin and piano; Variations and Essays in the Modes for piano.
