Fountain City

Small agricultural town in Wayne County, east Indiana; population (1990) 800. It is located 16 km/10 mi north of Richmond. Initially named Newport, it was settled by Quakers in the 1820s. The town's residents played a prominent role in the Underground Railroad; one local, Levi Coffin, personally aided over 2,000 escaping slaves. His house was so vital a link, that it has been called the Underground Railroad's ‘Grand Central Station’. Indiana's highest point (383 m/1,257 ft) is 4 km/2.5 mi to the northeast of the town, near Bethel.
