Four Last Songs

Sequence of songs for soprano and orchestra by Richard Strauss, composed in 1948, his last work. They were first performed in London, England, on 22 May 1950, with soloist Kirsten Flagstad, conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler. The first three texts are by Hermann Hesse, Frühling, September, and Beim Schlafengehen; no. 4 is by Joseph von Eichendorff, Im Abendrot.

On June 10, the first day of her three performances of Strauss's Four Last Songs with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, soprano Measha Brueggergosman underwent emergency open-heart surgery to repair a torn aorta.
