Fourdrinier

English paper-makers and inventors. With the assistance of Bryan Donkin, in 1801 the brothers first patented an improved design of a paper-making machine capable of producing a continuous sheet of paper. The same basic type of machine, with further improvements, is still in use today.

The liquid pulp was fed on to a wire-mesh belt through which the water could drain away. After the resulting damp web of paper was heated, it was passed between heavy rollers to achieve a smooth finish.

Forming Fabric Case Study 1: A newsprint machine with a Symformer top-wire forming unit operating at 4150 fpm was able to reduce forming section drive load by replacing the base fourdrinier double-layer fabric with a triple-layer fabric.
[6 7 8] The equipment used in this particular work consisted essentially of a 50-pound beater with copper-lined wooden tub and manganese-bronze bars and plate; a jordan refiner with bars of bronze and steel alloy; a four-plate, flat screen; a 29-inch Fourdrinier paper-making machine with a wire 33 feet long, two presses, nine 15-inch dryers, a machine calender stack of 7 rolls, and a reel; and a five-roll supercalender.
The new three-ply paper fourdrinier machine will use state-of-the-art technology to produce a strong, yet light-weight sheet of paper.
