Fox, Gustavus Vasa

Fox, Gustavus Vasa (1821-1883)

US naval officer. He became an assistant navy secretary and was an early promoter of the advantages of ironclad ships in warfare. He gave indispensable assistance to Secretary Gideon Welles during the Civil War.

He was born in Saugus, Massachusetts. He advocated using the USS Monitor in a battle with the Confederate navy.
