Foynes

Seaport in County Limerick, Republic of Ireland, on the River Shannon; population (2002) 500. During World War II, Foynes was a base for transatlantic flying boats; the old terminal now houses the Foynes Flying Boat Museum. The port has rail and deep-water facilities, and exports minerals.

The ruins of an Augustinian abbey 6 km/4 mi southeast of Foynes include a fishpond and a pigeon house. Nearby are the remains of the polygonal keep and motte and bailey of Shanid Castle, a stronghold of the Fizgeralds of Desmond.
