Fremont

Town in Alameda County, north-central California; population (2000) 203,400. It is located 32 km/20 mi south of Oakland, to the southeast of San Francisco Bay, on Alameda Creek and the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct. It is a residential and industrial suburb. Historically, its economy centred on quarrying, salt extraction, and the production of champagne, wine, fruits, poultry, and furniture. Automobile and truck manufacture became its main industry in the 1960s, however, and by the 1980s, the Silicon Valley boom had spread north to Fremont, which now produces software, lasers, and computer equipment. The reconstructed Dominican Mission San Jose (1809) is in the town.

Fremont

Town in Newaygo County, west-central Michigan; population (1990) 3,900. It is situated on Fremont Lake, 37 km/23 mi northeast of Muskegon. Best known as headquarters for the Gerber Company, with its baby-food processing plant, it is in a fruit growing, dairy, and poultry area. Nearby are several lakes and American Indian village sites and mounds.

Fremont

Town and administrative headquarters of Dodge County, east Nebraska; population (2000) 25,200. It is situated on the Platte River, 53 km/33 mi northwest of Omaha. Established in 1856, it grew with the 1866 arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad. It is a processing and distribution centre for grain, livestock, and dairy products. Fremont is home to the Midland Lutheran College (1883).

Fremont

Town and administrative headquarters of Sandusky County, north Ohio; population (1990) 17,600. It is situated on the Sandusky River in rich agricultural country, 34 km/21 mi west-southwest of Sandusky. Fremont's economy centres around sugar beets and canneries as well as the manufacture of such goods as automobile parts, electrical products, and clothing.

Birchard Library Park is on the site of Fort Stephenson, successfully defended by George Croghan's troops against the British and American Indians in 1813. Spiegel Grove, the home and grounds of 19th US president, Rutherford B Hayes, is now the Hayes Presidential Center.

Fremont

Commercial and residential district of north Seattle, Washington. It is located to the north of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, west of the city's University District, and southwest of Wallingford. A countercultural centre of the 1960s, it is now noted for its small shops and street art. Gasworks Park is to the south.
