Francesco Canova da Milano (1497–1543)

Italian lutenist and composer. Known as Il divino (‘the divine’), he was the finest composer of lute music before John Dowland. He was in the service first of the Duke of Mantua, about 1510, and then of Pope Paul III from 1535. He was a prolific composer, publishing and contributing to several books of lute pieces.
