To anticipate epidemics, scientists with the International Medical Research Center of Franceville (CIRMF) in Gabon teamed with several academic institutions, government ministries, and international conservation groups. Laboratory testing carried out at the Centre International de Recherches Medicales de Franceville (CIRMF) in Gabon confirmed that it was the Ebola virus. Four fleas collected from a pet monkey (Cercopithecus cephus) in Franceville, Gabon, were stored in 70% alcohol and sent to the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborative Center for Rickettsial Reference and Research in Marseille, France, where molecular studies were performed in April 2005. |
