Franceville

Town in southeast Gabon, 510 km/319 mi southeast of Libreville; population (2007 est) 44,900. Lying on the east bank of the Ogooué River, Franceville is the third-largest settlement in the country, and was founded by the French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza in 1880. Uranium and manganese are mined locally to the northwest, and some gold is mined to the southeast. The main local agricultural crop is coffee.

It is the terminus of a railway line from Libreville and has a small airport.
