Francia, José Gaspar Rodríguez de (1766–1840)
Paraguayan dictator 1814–40, known as El Supremo. A lawyer, he emerged as a strongman after independence was achieved in 1811, and was designated dictator by congress in 1814. Hostile to the Argentine regime, he sealed off the country and followed an isolationist policy.
