Francis of Paola, St (1416–1507)

Italian religious founder. Francis lived as a hermit near Paola, and the disciples who gathered around him formed a community known as the Minim friars. Pope Sixtus IV confirmed the Minims as an order in 1474. Francis was canonized in 1519, and his feast day is 2 April.
