Francistown

Commercial and industrial town in northeast Botswana, 150 km/93 mi southwest of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe; population (1991) 65,200. The town is the second largest in the country. Nearby, at Orapa and Letlhakane, there is diamond-mining; soda is extracted in Ntwetwe Pan; and gold is mined locally.

The town was originally established as a gold-mining centre.
