Frankfurt-an-der-Oder

Industrial city in the state of Brandenburg, northeast Germany, 80 km/50 mi southeast of Berlin; population (1995) 81,700. Situated close to the Polish border, it was the former capital of the East German district of Frankfurt from 1952–90. It is linked by the River Oder and its canals to the rivers Vistula and Elbe. Industries include semiconductors, chemicals, engineering, paper, and leather.

Frankfurt-an-der-oder was a member of the Hanseatic League trade federation from 1368, and had a university from 1506 until 1811. A new university has been established.

An annual music festival is held in March.
