Frankfurter, Felix (1882–1965)

Austrian-born US jurist and Supreme Court justice. As a supporter of liberal causes, Frankfurter was one of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920. Appointed to the US Supreme Court in 1939 by F D Roosevelt, he opposed the use of the judicial veto to advance political ends.

Born in Vienna, Frankfurter emigrated with his family to the USA 1894, attended the City College of New York, and received a law degree from Harvard 1906. After law school he served as assistant to the US attorney for the southern district of New York and joined the faculty of Harvard Law School 1914. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom 1963.
