Frankland, Edward (1825–1899)

British chemist. Frankland established the important theory of valency in 1852. Together with Norman Lockyer he discovered the element helium, and concluded that the sun's external layers are gaseous and vaporous. A professor of chemistry at Owens College, Manchester, and the Royal Institute, he received the Royal Society's highest honour – the Copley Medal – in 1897. He was knighted in 1897.
