Franklin County

County in central Ohio; area 1,406 sq km/543 sq mi; population (1990) 961,400. It is intersected by the Olentangy and Scioto rivers. Its administrative headquarters is Columbus, which, along with its suburbs, makes up much of the county's area. The diversified manufacturing at Columbus dominates its economy. Fruit, dairy, grain, livestock, and truck farming are also important, and limestone, sand, and gravel are quarried.

County in south-central Pennsylvania; area 2,005 sq km/774 sq mi; population (1990) 121,100. It is bordered to the south by the state of Maryland. Its administrative headquarters is Chambersburg. The county has marble and limestone quarries, and is also agricultural. It was the scene of many American Indian massacres in the years before the American Revolution.

Franklin County

County on Lake Champlain and the Québec border, in extreme northwest Vermont; area 1,681 sq km/649 sq km; population (1990) 40,000. St Albans is the county administrative headquarters. Franklin County's physical features include the Missisquoi and Lamoille rivers, and the Green Mountains to the east. Farm machinery, textile equipment, medicines, maple sugar, granite, lime, and paper, dairy, and wood products are produced.

County in south-central Virginia; area 1,769 sq km/683 sq mi; population (1990) 39,500. Its administrative headquarters is Rocky Mount. The county is situated at the west edge of the Piedmont and along the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is largely agricultural, although there is some manufacturing, especially around Rocky Mount. Black educator Booker T Washington was born in 1856 on the James Burroughs plantation, 21 km/13 mi southeast of Roanoke; the site is now the Booker T Washington National Monument.
