Franklin Mountains

Also found in: Wikipedia 0.01 sec.

Franklin Mountains

Mountain range in the west of Northwest Territories. This northern extension of the Rocky Mountains, which stretches for 500 km/300 mi along the eastern bank of the Mackenzie River, has its highest point at Cap Mountain (1,577 m/5,174 ft) near Wrigley (in the south of the range).

Most of the Franklin Mountain range, which runs northwest–southeast, is situated between Great Bear Lake (in the east) and the Mackenzie Mountains (in the west), of which the Franklins are often considered an eastern outlier. In the 1960s, lead and zinc were found here, and in 1972 a large pocket of natural gas was discovered at Pointed Mountain, in the south.

Franklin Mountains

Mountain range extending from north of El Paso, in the far west of Texas, into New Mexico. The Franklins reach a high point of 2,194 m/7,192 ft at North Franklin Mountain (or Peak). Comanche Peak is at the southern end of the range, and Ranger Peak is the site of an aerial tramway. In the early 20th century, some tin mining was undertaken in the Franklin Mountains.
