Franklin, Aretha (Louise) (1942– )US soul singer. Her voice has a four-octave range and she uses it with a passionate conviction and authority developed from her gospel background. Her hit singles include ‘Respect’ (1967), ‘Think’ (1968), and ‘Chain of Fools’ (1968), and her albums include Lady Soul (1968), Amazing Grace (1972), Who's Zoomin' Who? (1985), and A Rose is a Rose (1998).
