Franks of Headington, Oliver Shewell Franks, Baron (1905–1992)

British scholar and diplomat. Franks's career took in a variety of academic and governmental posts. A professor of moral philosophy at Glasgow (1935–37), he worked briefly for the Ministry of Supply before becoming provost of Queen's College, Oxford, in 1946. In 1948 Franks became British ambassador in Washington, and on his return to England he was chairman of Lloyds Bank Ltd until 1962. A member of the National Economic Development Council (1962–64), he became chancellor of the University of East Anglia in 1965.
