Frasch, Herman (1851-1914)

German-born US chemist and engineer. He discovered a new way of refining paraffin and developed a desulfurization process for petroleum. Other important discoveries include a method for mining sulphur directly by injecting superheated water into the mine.

He was born in Gaildorf, Germany. His discoveries allowed him to found the Union Sulfur Company, which led to the USA becoming a major exporter of sulphur.
