Frederick (1676-1751)

King of Sweden from 1720. Third son of the Landgrave Karl of Hesse-Cassel, Frederick entered the Swedish service in 1715. He became king when his wife, Ulrica Eleonora, the sister of Charles XII, denounced her claim to the throne.

Frederick

Town and administrative headquarters of Frederick County, north Maryland; population (2000) 52,800. It is located 72 km/45 mi west-northwest of Baltimore. It is the market, shipping, and processing centre of a rich Piedmont agricultural area, and has a variety of light manufacturing, financial, and high-tech enterprises. In the city are the National Cancer Research Center, Hood College (1893), and Frederick Community College (1957).

Settled in 1745 by Palatinate Germans, the city includes an extensive historical district of 33 blocks. On the north side is Fort Detrick, an Army installation that has been involved in both germ warfare and epidemiological research. A grain and transportation centre during the Civil War, Frederick saw much military activity; an 1862 Confederate occupation gave rise to the legend of Barbara Frietchie, who was supposed to have defiantly flown the Union flag. Monocacy National Battlefield lies to the north along the Monocacy River.
