Frederick County

County in north Maryland; area 1,717 sq km/663 sq mi; population (1990) 150,200. It is bounded to the north by the state of Pennsylvania, to the northeast by the Monocacy River, and to the southwest by the Potomac River and the state of Virginia. Its administrative headquarters is Frederick. The county lies primarily in the Piedmont, with its extreme west in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Middletown Valley. It includes a rich agricultural area that produces wheat, corn, hay, apples, peaches, dairy products, livestock, and poultry. Frederick is its market, shipping, and industrial centre.
