Frederiksted

Town on the west coast of the island of St Croix, in the US Virgin Islands; population (1990) 1,100. It is located 18 km/11 mi west-southwest of Christiansted. Columbus anchored at the Salt River here in 1493. Founded in 1751 by the Danish, the town was largely destroyed by a tidal wave in 1867 and fire in 1878. Today it is a port, exporting sugar and rum, and a tourist centre.
