Fredrikstad

Norwegian port, 93 km/58 mi by rail southeast of Oslo, in Ostfold county at the mouth of the River Glomma on Oslo Fjord; population (2007 est) 71,300. It is a centre of the timber trade and has shipyards; there are also canning, paint, porcelain and plastic industries.

Fredrikstad was founded in 1657 by Fredrik II, king of Denmark and Norway, as a fortress town. Remains of the fortifications, including gates, drawbridge, and moat, can be seen in Gamlebyen (the old town).
