automatic writing

Abnormal phenomenon, a type of automatism, in which a person writes spontaneously, apparently without control over what is written. Automatic writing may sometimes arise as a symptom of mental disturbance. The phenomenon has also occurred in connection with mediumship, with ostensible communications from deceased persons taking the form of automatic scripts.

Some individuals have attempted to develop a facility for automatic writing, often with the aim of gaining access to the unconscious mind. In psychology, there have been reports of its therapeutic use to stimulate memory in patients exhibiting varying degrees of mental dissociation.
