free jazzStyle of jazz characterized by its lack of harmonic structures or melodic patterns, driven instead by improvisation, that emerged in the USA during the late 1950s. Saxophonist Ornette Coleman coined the term with his album Free Jazz (1960). Other pioneers of the movement include saxophonist John Coltrane and pianist Cecil Taylor.
