Opera by Carl Maria von Weber (libretto by F Kind, based on a story in Apel and Laun's Gespensterbuch), first produced at the Berlin Schauspielhaus, Germany, on 18 June 1821. It tells how Max invokes the ‘Black Huntsman’ to help win a shooting competition and Agathe. He is banished for his use of the supernatural, but is allowed to return in a year to marry.
