Fremaux, Louis

Fremaux, Louis (1921– )

French conductor. He studied at the Paris Conservatory and was musical director of the Monte Carlo Orchestra 1955–66 and principal conductor of the Rhône-Alpes Philharmonic Orchestra at Lyon 1968–71. He led the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra 1969–78, notably with concerts of Berlioz and modern music, and was chief conductor, then principal guest conductor, of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra 1979–85. He made appearances throughout Europe and South America, with recordings of music by Rameau, Campra, and Berlioz (Grand Messe des Morts).
