French Academy

Literary society concerned with maintaining the purity of the French language, founded by Richelieu in 1635. Membership is limited to 40 ‘Immortals’ at a time.

Suspended during the French Revolution but restored by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803, it is one of five academies that comprise the French Institute. The French Academy publishes an official dictionary of the French language, advises the government on language issues, and awards language and literature prizes annually.
