Institut de France

Institute established 1795, composed (since 1832) of the following five academies: Académie Française (see Academy, French), founded 1635; Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, founded 1663; Académie des Sciences, founded 1666; Académie des Beaux Arts, founded 1803; and Académie des Sciences Morales et Politiques, founded 1832.

Each academy has a separate organization but participates in the advantages of the common library, archives, and funds. Election to membership is by ballot and subject to confirmation by the government. Every member receives a salary and an allowance (annual allowance plus attendance fees).
