Frere, John Hookham

Frere, John Hookham (1769–1846)

English author and diplomat. He made some excellent translations of the plays of Aristophanes, and was one of the founders of The Quarterly Review.

He was born in London and educated at Eton and Caius College, Cambridge. He served in the Foreign Office and subsequently entered Parliament, where he became under-secretary for foreign affairs. He was envoy to Portugal 1800 and ambassador to Spain 1802–04 and 1808–09.
