Fresnillo

Largest town in the state of Zacatecas in central Mexico; population (1995) 176,900. Situated 2,200 m/7,218 ft above sea level, at the foot of the Cerro de Proano mountain, the town lies 53 km/33 mi northwest of the state capital, Zacatecas, on the Mexico City-Ciudad Juarez railway. It is an important centre for mining, cattle rearing, and agriculture. The chief minerals extracted are silver, lead, zinc, gold, copper, and tin, with most of the veins located in the Cerro de Proano.
