Frey, Paul (1942– )

Canadian tenor. He played professional ice hockey, then made his singing debut at Toronto in 1978, as Werther. He sang with the Basel Opera from 1979, in operas by Strauss and Wagner, and as Don José and Peter Grimes. His British debut was in 1986, as Weber's Huon at Edinburgh, and his Bayreuth and New York Metropolitan Opera House debuts were both in 1987, as Lohengrin and Bacchus. He sang at the Munich Festival 1986–88, as Apollo (from Daphne) and Midas (from Die Liebe der Danae). In 1988 he sang at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and in Sydney, as Lohengrin and Walther. His recorded roles include Strauss's Emperor and Bacchus.
