Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Frick, Henry C. (Clay) (1849–1919)

US industrialist, art collector, and philanthropist. He founded Frick and Company in 1871 to build and operate coke ovens near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and by 1889 controlled two-thirds of the capacity in the area. In 1882 Frick met Andrew Carnegie and he later became chairman of Carnegie Steel (1889–1900), leading the company through the Homestead (Pennsylvania) labour strike of 1892. In 1901 he became director of the US Steel Corporation.

A serious art collector, he bequeathed his New York City home and his art collection as a public museum. He also gave large sums of money to various educational and medical institutions and donated a large park to Pittsburgh. He was born in West Overton, Pennsylvania. In 1892, during the Homestead labour strike, Frick was shot and stabbed by Alexander Berkman; he calmly telegraphed Carnegie (who was in Scotland) before seeking treatment.
