Friedenstag

Opera by Richard Strauss (libretto by J Gregor, who first suggested it to Stefan Zweig, based on Calderón's play La redención de Breda and Velázquez's picture illustrating that), first produced in Munich, Germany, on 24 July 1938. It describes how a besieged town faces self-destruction rather than defeat. At the last moment a peace is declared and enemies meet as brothers.

The opera premiered the following year in Dresden, on a double bill with the Bavarian composer's paean to peace, Friedenstag.
He sang in three Strauss operatic premieres: Friedenstag, Die Liebe der Danae, and the incomparable Capriccio.
Consider the journey--from classical antiquity and Biblical times in Elektra and Salome, to the end of the 30 Years War in Friedenstag, to the farcical retirement home of a 17th-century admiral in Die Schweigsame Frau, to the more intimate 18th- and 19th-century drawing rooms and parlors of the European aristocracy in Der Rosenkavalier, Arabella and Capriccio, and to a timeless, magical realm where spirits and humans meet in Die Frau Ohne Schatten.
