Friedlaender, Walter

Friedlaender, Walter (1873–1966)

German-born US art historian. Having gained a PhD in Sanskrit from the University of Berlin in 1898, he studied art history and lived in Italy for several years, before teaching at the University of Freiburg, Germany (1914–1933). Dismissed from his post by the Nazis in 1933, he emigrated to the USA in 1935, where he took up a teaching post at New York University, specializing in subjects ranging from the mannerist style of the Renaissance to 19th-century art.
