Friedrichs, Kurt O (1901–1982)

German-born US mathematician. A National Academy of Sciences member, recipient of the National Medal of Science (1977), and author of several books, he conducted groundbreaking work in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical physics. He taught at New York University from 1937, and later went on to direct the university's Courant Institute (1966–67). Born in Kiel, Germany, he emigrated to the USA in 1937.
